Students pursuing an associate degree in petroleum services with a safety technology option learn how to ensure worker and environmental safety while also keeping up with the changing government regulations, increasing industry standards and common problems, such as workplace drug or alcohol abuse.
The Nicholls safety technology program prepares students to:
- conduct work site assessments to identify safety, health and environmental risks,
- implement hazard control and loss prevention measures,
- access and monitor hazard control measures,
- develop and manage disaster planning and emergency response strategies,
- communicate safety, health and environmental risks and controls both verbally and in writing to management, employees, clients, contractors, vendors and regulators,
- pursue professional certification by passing the examination for the Occupational Health Safety Technologist certification from the Council on Certification of Health, Environmental and Safety Technologist.
The associate degree program in safety technology incorporates the historical, current and emerging regulations and technologies in safety, health and environmental practices, with a focus on the oil and gas industry. Coursework and assignments are geared toward real world safety case studies and safety problems facing the oil and gas industry.
