Indiana State University

The departmental programs focus on the prevention of illness, injury, and accidents in association with the promotion of public, environmental, and occupational health and safety. An ongoing demand exists for competent professionals and specialists in the areas of health and safety education, management service, and research, in both the public and private sectors. The goal of the department, accordingly, is to provide students with the opportunity to establish a solid foundation and background in environmental, health, and safety issues through academic education and training in the classroom and the field. Graduates from the programs will be well prepared for environmental, health, and safety careers in academic, industrial, and governmental settings.

The School of Health and Human Performance was established in 1965 and consists of the Departments of Athletic Training, Health and Safety, Physical Education, and Recreation and Sport Management.

The primary curricula in the School are designed to prepare students to enter the following professional fields:

(1) health and disease/injury prevention careers in community health education, therapeutic recreation, athletic training, exercise science/fitness, environmental health, occupational safety management, and driver and traffic safety;

(2) teaching careers in health education or physical education, with specializations in coaching; and

(3) management careers in fitness, recreation, safety, and sport. In order to provide students with greater career flexibility, opportunities are also offered in the following areas: occupational toxicology/industrial hygiene and driver and motorcycle safety education.
