Occupational Safety and Health refers to the practice of observing, evaluating, and analyzing working environments to ensure that they are safe for employees. Whether a factory, a kitchen, or a shop, every workplace can potentially be a dangerous work environment. Graduates of a safety management program will recognize, anticipate, and identify potential hazards so that the employer may make appropriate changes before accidents happen.
The Organizational Leadership and Supervision program offers a concentration in Safety, which gives students the necessary knowledge and background to work in a variety of safety-related jobs. Courses will provide up-to-date technical information covering the most important areas of safety.
Graduates will have an understanding of the economic, legal, and social factors related to providing a safe and healthful work place in addition to being able to recognize, evaluate, and control occupational health hazards. Upon completion of the program, students will have an understanding of the fundamentals, principles, and tools for dealing with fire and hazardous materials and know how to coordinate the safety program with the goals of the organization.
Graduates can pursue careers as occupational health and safety specialists in a number of industries. Factories, hospitals, manufacturing plants, schools or government agencies typically employ health and safety officers. The government hires safety inspectors to monitor organizations for compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. Graduates have many positions available to them, including that of an ergonomist, industrial hygienist, and loss control officer.
