The field of environmental studies requires an
interdisciplinary approach that integrates the natural sciences, social
sciences, and humanities with the ability to create solutions to environmental
problems. The Environmental Studies Program at The University of Montana seeks
to provide students with the literacy, skills, and commitment needed to foster
a healthy natural environment and to create a more sustainable, equitable, and
peaceful world.
To these ends, the Master of Science degree in Environmental
Studies educates and challenges students to become knowledgeable, motivated,
and engaged in environmental affairs. Students acquire the skills and awareness
that enables them to promote positive social change and to improve the
environment and communities of Montana,
the region, and the world. Students have the option of designing their own
programs of study, which combines classroom and experiential learning
opportunities to provide the well-rounded perspective and range of skills
needed to be effective and engaged participants in shaping the course of human
events. The program also offers research in key areas of interest, including
environmental law, watershed conservation, ecological restoration,
environmental writing, sustainable food and farming, and renewable energy.
Alumni of the Environmental Studies Program have entered
into a wide range careers, including education, environmental law, nonprofit
leadership, environmental research, journalism, literature, consulting, forest
services, project management, governmental relations, and wildlife research.
