Lyons Salt Company

Lyons Salt Company Lyons Salt Company is located in the heart of the agricultural belt, in the center of the state of Kansas, on the outskirt of Lyons, KS, a community of 3700 residents. The discovery of salt in this area was brought about by accident. The need for oil was coming about in the late 1800’s due to the mechanization of the automobile industry. In searching for oil, which lied at 3000 ft. below ground level, drillers hit a salt bed at the 750 ft. depth that was 200 to 300 hundred ft. thick. In 1917, a shaft was sunk to the 1000 ft. depth. Lyons became a boom town in the following years as well as several other towns in the State of Kansas. At one time there were as many as 10 mine shafts in the State producing salt. This could easily happen as the body of salt was a contiguous body measuring 83 miles wide and 300 miles long. From 1917 until 1990, the Lyons rock salt facility as well as an evaporative salt operation was wholly owned by the same company. In the earlier days of this period, the rock salt operation did not have the product demand that the evaporative facility did. The rock salts main use was for agricultural purposes as well as for making ice cream. Road salt did not really come into play until after the 50’s when emphasis was just starting to be put on transportation safety. From this point on the demand for rock salt continued to grow to a ten million ton a year industry. In 1990, the Lyons Salt Company was bought under private ownership and was split from the evaporative owners. Lyons Salt Company is a half million ton a year operation incorporating a surface milling & a packaging operation to support the underground operation. The product is sold to the road deicing and agricultural industry and shipped throughout the Midwest. As many as 300 trucks per day are loaded with bulk and palletized package product during the peak season drawing from 55,000 tons of surface storage. The mining operation has several task performed in cyclic fashion in a room and pillar style such as drilling, undercutting, powdering, blasting and mucking. The blasted muck is trammed from the blast area to a stamler feeder breaker to size down to – 8 inches. From there it is conveyed to a secondary crusher to downsize to – 1 inch. It is then conveyed to the shaft bottom where it is hoisted 1000 ft. to the surface for final sizing and kiln drying of the feed salt portion. The facility supports 50 personnel in a year around operation and operates with an excellent safety record.
