Job Description
Our Chemical Client has an immediate opening for a qualified Safety Specialist with excellent opportunities for personal and career growth at their Houston area, TX facility.

The key purpose of this role is to maintain safe plant operations by conducting inspections; conducting safety, health and fire response training; investigating incidents; and improving safety preparedness.

Key Accountabilities:

Ø Develops safety and emergency preparedness by conducting emergency response training drills, developing and presenting emergency response training, including fire protection, response, and evacuation

Ø Oversees the maintenance of plant emergency response and safety equipment such as fire suppression, HAZMAT, rescue, etc.

Ø Serves as or supports Incident Commander, Safety Officer or Support Liaison during emergencies

Ø Monitors plant compliance with lock-out/tag-out, confined space entry, machine guarding, hot work and preparing safety procedures as needed.

Ø Continuously improves safety conditions by investigating accidents, injuries, and hazards; serving as technical expert on safety committees; and developing and recommending new safety and health policies as needed

Ø Consults with Design and Process sections relative to new processes, process changes, or additions to existing processes through the PSM Management of Change process

Ø Prepares and issues reports as required by state and/or federal agency regulations; Updates the annual VPP 'Safety and Health Evaluation'

Ø Periodically reviews and updates plant safety procedures and Emergency Action Plan

Ø Interacts and develops a relationship with the local emergency response community

Ø Updates job knowledge by tracking updates in Federal (especially OSHA), state, and local safety and health regulations and guidelines; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks and participating in professional organizations

Ø Enhances department and organization reputations by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments

Ø Has a working knowledge of Industrial Hygiene, Behavior Based Safety and Process Safety Management.

Educational Requirements & Work Experience:

Ø Bachelors degree in Safety or a related science or discipline from an accredited college or university

Ø Minimum five (5) years in a petrochemical industry

Ø Experienced Industrial Fire Fighter, Incident Commander and/or Instructor

Ø Certified Safety Professional, (CSP) and experience with a OSHA VPP site is preferred

Ø Has the ability to develop and deliver presentations to employee groups in a professional setting

Ø Solves problems by gathering information and evaluating options

Ø Competently analyses and prioritizes information to make appropriate recommendations

Ø Experienced in analyzing complex functions, procedures, and problems to find creative, logical solutions

Ø Handles work of diverse scope and complexity

Ø Able to systematically analyze and evaluate problems in business operations

Ø Ability to expand job responsibilities, suggest improvements, and collaborate with others to generate ideas and improve processes

Ø Has the functional and technical knowledge and skills to do the job, i.e. knowledgeable and experienced within the fields of state and federal regulations

Ø Develops innovative ideas, advancements and solutions

Ø Pays attention to detail and approaches work in a meticulous and thorough manner
