DESCRIPTION: The University of California, San Diego, Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) Senior Technician Hazardous Waste Field Chemist works under supervision of the Operations Supervisor and performs such duties as collection of hazardous waste chemicals, radioactive materials and biohazardous waste from university labs and facilities. Incumbent processes hazardous waste materials including: segregation, compaction, vial crushing, solidification, recycling/reuse, lab-packing, consolidation, storage for radioactive decay, marking and labeling shipping containers and preparation of shipping documents and transportation. Position employee also provides assistance to university faculty, researchers, staff and private contractors in matters of accumulation, packaging, storage, labeling and disposal of hazardous chemicals, radioactive waste and biohazardous waste; assists with all the lab packing for the main site and off-site facilities, performs weekly chemical inspections on-site and off-site, and services Nimitz Marine Facility, Medical Center and other off-site facilities. Database activities include the maintenance of the Chemical Waste Tracking System with new regulations and processing changes. Position also provides coordination between resources and personnel to arrange special pick ups and provides work direction to Lab Assistant IIIs in accordance with EH&S goals and EMF operating procedures. Position is part of the campus HazMat team which responds to hazardous spills and chemical emergencies and assists with hazardous materials clean up.

QUALIFICATIONS: * Two years of hazardous waste collection, handling, and disposal experience; a degree in a science-related field, certifications, or undergraduate classes; or a combination of experience and education. * Demonstrated ability to safely negotiate trucks around campus and city streets while transporting hazardous waste. Ability to move or lift large chemical drums, carboys, bottles boxes etc. * Ability to operate safely all equipment at the EMF including trucks and lift gates, forklift, hand trucks, pallet jacks, carts and other lifting aids. * Completion of an accredited hazardous materials management curriculum to meet the HAZWOPER requirements. * Understanding of proper application and use of personal protection equipment including respirators, gloves, eye protection and protective clothing and the ability to monitor and train others. * Knowledge of safe emergency hazardous materials spill response.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: * Must pass a medical examination and be cleared to perform physical requirements and wear respirators, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus and personal protective clothing * Must have a valid California driver license and must obtain a Class C-Hazardous Materials endorsement (Must pass exam within 90 days of employment).
