Job Description

This position, Environmental Coordinator, supports Weyerhaeuser’s East Kentucky TimberStrand operation located in Hazard, KY and reports to the Plant Engineer. The East Kentucky TimberStrand Plant is part of the iLevel business leading the world's residential structural frame market with innovative products, systems, and services for the structural frame industry worldwide.

Key Functions:
The Environmental Coordinator will provide technical support to the operation to ensure compliance with all appropriate federal, state, local and corporate environmental regulations and permits. The Environmental Coordinator will work closely with the plant Lead Team to ensure all environmental expectations for the operation are met - providing leadership, coordination and technical expertise in all environmental areas to achieve excellence. The Environmental Coordinator will engage team members to analyze, develop, and implement processes and procedures for continuous improvement of the site’s environmental culture and associated indicators of a safe and empowered work environment. This position will have shared accountability for establishing and maintaining reliable methods for improving environmental performance and ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements.

The Environmental Coordinator, with limited direction, will:
  • Plan, organize, manage and evaluate the plant’s environmental programs.
  • Assist operating personnel in ensuring permit conditions are met.
  • Maintain working knowledge of federal, state, local and corporate regulations.
  • Ensure facility compliance with all appropriate environmental regulations and permits and assist operating personnel in ensuring permit conditions are met. (Permits include Title V Air Operating Permit, Storm Water Permit and Waste Water Permit, among others.)
  • Interact professionally and pro-actively with associates, company environmental contacts and governmental agencies.
  • Ensure environmental records are properly created, stored and maintained. Identify federal, state and local legal requirements affecting the environmental aspects and obligations of the facility.
  • Oversee the Environmental Management System (EMS) program to the ISO 14001-2004 Standard, including all work instructions, environmental procedures, plans & programs, environmental training aspects of associate and contractor orientation, internal audits, management review meetings, communications to associates and to the Unit General Manager, and responsibility for document controls to continue the strong focus on continuous improvement of our environmental program.
  • Serve as primary contact for, and respond to, leaks, spills and any other releases of potential environmental pollutants; investigate and ensure appropriate corrective actions are taken.
  • Ensure appropriate associates are trained on environmental aspects particular to their work.
  • Work with production and maintenance associates to ensure all observations, monitoring and documentation are completed as required and mill management updated accordingly. This includes duties for audits and inspections.
  • Follow up and track corrective and preventive action programs.


Qualifications:
Position Requirements:
  • A strong commitment to working safely in an industrial environment.
  • Bachelor's degree OR an equivalent combination of environmental certification, experience and/or plant knowledge.
  • 3 or more years environmental or closely related experience.
  • Technical expertise in manufacturing and environmental processes.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to interact effectively with federal, state and local regulators (experience interacting with Kentucky regulators a plus)
  • Ability to interact effectively with mill operators, maintenance associates and mill management team.
  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as organizational, planning and project management skills.
