Job Description

Location:  Chicago IL (NW suburb)

  • NOTE 1: There is no relocation offered for this position thus only Chicago metro area residents will be considered for this position.
  • NOTE 2:  Only candidates currently employed, or with strong historical background, in the following industries will be considered for this position:  food/beverage, chemical, petrochemical, pharma, plastics, and similar processing industries.

Duties:  Direct and support management of all Safety, Health, & Environmental (SHE) programs at two sites in compliance with company SHE policies & processes and with all applicable local, state, and federal SHE regulations.  The responsibilities of this position focus in the safety field (~80% of duties), thus candidate core competency must be in safety

Responsibilities:

  • Oversees site Behavioral Based Safety program and partners with management team to drive an employee safety-based culture.  Participates in cross-divisional committees and task forces.  Manages customer service requests relating to SHE.
  • Ensures routine SHE audits are performed and works with site managers and employees to ensure corrective actions are satisfactorily completed.
  • Manages SHE compliance activities including preparation, review, training and auditing of procedures.
  • Interprets Operations regulations and recommends changes and improvements to increase SHE performance and reduce releases.
  • Prepares and submits required regulatory reports.  Prepares and manages SHE operating budget. 
  • Reviews capital projects and specifies changes in scope to ensure environmental and safety standards are met throughout projects.
  • Represents management during applicable audits and inspections by regulatory. agencies and cross-divisional audits.  Interprets regulatory guidelines for management and employees.
  • Manages medical oversight program in conjunction with HR; including worker’s compensation, follow-up for medical services and employee physicals including pre-employment physicals, routine check-ups, chemical exposure monitoring, and hearing conservation program.
  • Industrial Hygiene (IH) responsibilities at site level with potential to assist in business unit IH initiatives.

Functional Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent communication, organization, and negotiation skills are essential, including experience collaborating and influencing in matrix structures.
  • Demonstrated project management, process improvement and computer skills are necessary.

Qualifications (education / experience)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in environmental, health, & safety science, engineering, or management (or related fields) required, with 6-10 years experience in SHE programs in a manufacturing setting.
  • Safety and Health experience must include Ergonomics, Machine Guarding, LOTO, Electrical Safety, Dust Exposure, IAQ, PIV, Incident and Root Cause Investigation and related Corrective Action development and implementation, Industrial Hygiene
  • Experience with Behavioral Based Safety programs required
  • SHE audit experience required
  • Environmental experience must include air, hazardous waste, wastewater, and EPCRA
  • Pastparticipation in Emergency Response Teams
  • Budget preparation and management.
