Job Description

Position:  Senior Corporate Environmental, Health, and Safety Engineer

 Location: St. Louis, MO

Successful candidates will provide leadership and expertise in health, safety & environmental issues, while working towards eliminating worker injuries, minimizing waste and pollution, and attaining compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.  The selected individual will also be knowledgeable of new developments in EHS technologies and Federal, State and local regulations, communicating these to management as appropriate.  Candidates will also be responsible for tracking and analyzing worker injuries and developing training programs to emphasize the importance of workplace safety and eliminating injuries and costs, as well as auditing facilities for EHS compliance and arranging periodic EHS conferences for company personnel.

This position requires travel throughout North American up to 40% of the time and occasional travel to Asia Pacific and Europe.

A bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field and 5-10 years of relevant experience are required.  A Master’s degree is preferred.  Candidates must also have experience with industrial EHS compliance, assurance and training, at multiple facilities.

Primary Responsibilities:

This position will provide leadership and expertise in health and safety issues with the goal of helping the divisions to eliminate worker injuries and associated costs and attain compliance with all applicable requirements for Company facilities in North America.  The position will also provide leadership and expertise in environmental issues with the goal of fulfilling the Corporate EHS Policy by helping the divisions’ North American facilities attain compliance and move to pollution prevention and waste minimization.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

The position will:

  1. Work with the division to assure that all company facilities are in compliance with all applicable Federal, State/Provincial, and Local environmental, health, and safety (EHS) laws and regulations.
  2. Work with the facilities to track workers injuries and associated costs and to facilitate worker recovery and return to work.
  3. Collect and analyze worker injury data for the facilities in North America.
  4. Apprise management of emerging issues, current status with respect to those issues, and the resources necessary to comply.
  5. Provide EHS expertise to all parts of the Corporation.
  6. Coordinate and disseminate new developments in EHS technologies.
  7. Coordinate and disseminate new developments in Federal, State/Provincial, and Local requirements.  Work with government agencies during the development of these requirements to affect a favorable outcome.
  8. Work with the facilities to train all employees to maintain full compliance and eliminate injuries and costs including, but not limited to, training on general safety and environmental awareness; specific programs (e.g. confined space, bloodborne pathogens, stormwater); enforcement provisions including the potential for fines, forced shutdowns, & imprisonment; equipment operation, and general safety practices.
  9. Audit Company facilities for EHS compliance as directed by the Corporation.
  10. Communicate with Federal, State/Provincial and Local authorities regarding compliance issues and negotiate means of compliance.  Assist corporate officials during civil or criminal investigations.
  11. Review capital expenditures for EHS issues.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

In addition to the education and experience requirements noted below, the position also requires the following:

  • Ability to communicate and negotiate effectively with Company employees that do not report to the position and external entities varying from vendors, contractors, lawyers, and government officials.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State/Provincial, and Local EHS laws and regulations, the process by which they are adopted, and the methods to influence their outcome.
  • Ability to work with computer programs and systems for reporting, record keeping, and regulation access.
  • Fluent or working knowledge of Spanish as a second language, preferred.

Experience:

This position requires five (5) to ten (10) years experience with increasing responsibility for industrial health & safety compliance assurance, training, workers compensation management, and negotiations with government and other external entities and/or industrial environmental compliance assurance, training, permitting, and environmental system operation.

Education:

Minimum Bachelor degree (with Masters degree preferred) in Engineering or Safety.

Continuing education in recent EHS developments.
